A dam or reservoir is a storage space for water, hydrocarbons or gas. A reservoir usually means an enlarged natural or artificial lake, a storage pond, or backwater created by using a dam or sluice to store water. Reservoirs can be created by controlling a flow that drains an existing body of water, or can be built in valleys by using a dam. Alternatively, a reservoir can be built by excavating flat area and/or constructing retaining walls and levees.
